What is a voter roster?
A voter roster is an official list or register used to verify people who are entitled to vote in an election and to support voter check-in before a ballot is issued. Depending on the jurisdiction, the roster may be paper or electronic and can include fields used to record that a voter appeared or received a ballot.
How is an election roster used at a polling place?
At a polling place, election workers use the roster to locate the voter’s record, verify the information required by local procedure, confirm the voter is at the correct location or has the correct ballot style, and record ballot issuance. Electronic poll books can perform many of the same roster functions digitally.
Is a voter roster the same as a voter registration list?
The terms can overlap, but they are not always identical. A voter registration list is the broader official record of registered voters, while a polling-place roster may be a working list or extract used for check-in in a specific election. Jurisdictions use different names and formats for these election records.
