What is key escrow in cybersecurity?

Key escrow is an arrangement in which a trusted system or designated party retains recoverable cryptographic key material so encrypted data can be accessed when authorized recovery is necessary. In certificate-based environments, this can include storing a copy of the private key associated with an encryption certificate for later data recovery.

How does a key escrow system work?

A key escrow system securely stores copies or components of cryptographic keys and provides a controlled process for authorized recovery. Depending on the design, one trusted repository may hold the key or separate escrow agents may hold different components. Strong authentication, authorization, logging, separation of duties, and protection of the escrowed keys are critical.

What are the risks of key escrow?

Key escrow creates a powerful recovery capability, but the escrow repository also becomes a high-value security target. If escrowed keys are stolen, misused, or released without authorization, protected data may be exposed. Good designs therefore limit access, separate responsibilities, audit recovery events, protect stored key material, and define strict recovery procedures.
