What is a dedicated line?

A dedicated line is a telecommunications connection or circuit reserved for the use of a particular customer, system, or pair of locations rather than shared as ordinary public access. It is commonly used for reliable voice or data communications and may also be called a leased line or private circuit, depending on the service.

Is a dedicated line the same as a leased line?

Often, yes. In business networking, “dedicated line” and “leased line” are commonly used for a fixed-capacity private connection supplied for one customer’s use. However, product terminology can differ by provider. The important characteristics are whether capacity is dedicated, what endpoints are connected, and what availability, bandwidth, and service guarantees apply.

Is a dedicated line automatically secure or encrypted?

No. A dedicated line can reduce exposure to ordinary shared-network traffic, but dedicated capacity does not automatically provide encryption or complete security. Organizations may still need encryption, authentication, access controls, monitoring, physical protections, and resilient routing. Security depends on the circuit design, provider controls, endpoint configuration, and the sensitivity of the data carried.
