What does requalification mean in election technology?

Requalification is a deprecated election-technology term for obtaining qualification again after a previous qualification has been revoked. It describes putting a voting system or component through the required qualification process anew. Modern certification programs may use different terminology, so the governing standards and approval authority determine the exact procedure.

When would a voting system need requalification?

Under the older usage, requalification would be relevant after a system’s qualification had been revoked and the system needed to demonstrate compliance again. The actual trigger, testing scope, documentation, and approval process depend on the applicable certification program. Current authorities may instead describe similar work as recertification, re-examination, or retesting.

Is requalification the same as recertification?

Not exactly. Requalification historically referred to obtaining qualification anew after revocation, while recertification commonly means re-examining a previously certified system after a modification or other triggering change. The terms can overlap in ordinary speech, but election-system programs define their own approval stages, so the controlling standard should be checked.
