What does duplicate voter registration mean?

A duplicate voter registration is generally a new registration application submitted for a person who is already registered under the same identifying information and address. It can happen when a voter re-registers, submits an update, or is unsure whether an earlier application was processed. A duplicate record does not by itself mean duplicate voting.

Does duplicate registration mean someone voted twice?

No. Duplicate registration and duplicate voting are different issues. A person can submit more than one registration application without casting more than one ballot. Election officials use voter-list maintenance and record-matching procedures to identify and resolve duplicate records. Voting more than once is governed separately by election law and ballot-issuance controls.

How do election officials handle duplicate registrations?

Election officials compare identifying information, addresses, voter IDs, and other authorized data to determine whether records belong to the same person. Depending on the jurisdiction, they may merge, update, flag, or cancel redundant records while preserving required history. The objective is to maintain one accurate current registration for each eligible voter.
