What does a secretary of state do?

A secretary of state is a state-level official whose responsibilities are defined by state law. In many states, the office oversees statewide elections, voter-registration systems, candidate filings, business records, or official state documents. The title does not guarantee identical duties everywhere, and some states assign election administration to another official or board.

Does every secretary of state run elections?

No. Many secretaries of state serve as the chief election official or oversee major election functions, but election governance differs by state. Some states place responsibilities with a state board, lieutenant governor, elections commission, or other office. Local election administration may also be handled by counties, municipalities, clerks, or boards.

Why is the secretary of state important in election administration?

The secretary of state can be important to election administration because the office may issue guidance, maintain statewide voter-registration systems, certify candidates or results, coordinate voting-system requirements, and support local officials. The actual powers are state-specific, so a role described for one state should not automatically be applied to another.
