What does revote mean?
A revote is the act or process of voting again. In an election context, it can describe a new vote held after an earlier vote is invalidated, set aside, tied, disrupted, or otherwise required to be repeated under applicable rules. A revote involves casting votes again rather than simply checking the original count.
Is a revote the same as a recount?
No. A revote asks voters or members of a voting body to cast votes again, creating a new set of votes. A recount re-examines or retabulates votes that were already cast. Which procedure is available depends on the governing election law, legislative rule, organizational rule, or court order for the particular vote.
When can a revote happen?
A revote can happen when the authority governing an election or decision orders voting to be repeated, such as after a procedural failure, invalidated result, unresolved tie, or other legally recognized problem. The circumstances are jurisdiction-specific. In public elections, a new vote generally requires a clear legal basis rather than an informal decision to vote again.
