A cryptographic protocol executed by a set of servers, known as mix-servers, that provides anonymity for a group of senders. Their individual messages can be encrypted and mixed so that after decryption it is not possible to determine which message emanated from a particular sender. The application to electronic voting is that ballots can be made public without compromising voter privacy.
What is a mix-net?
A mix-net is a cryptographic privacy system that takes a set of encrypted messages or ballots, changes their order, and often re-encrypts them so observers cannot easily link each input to its output. In voting research, the goal is to separate a voter's identity or submission path from the decrypted ballot.
How does a mix-net protect ballot privacy?
A mix-net processes encrypted inputs through one or more mixing servers. Each server shuffles the order and may transform the ciphertexts while producing evidence that the transformation was valid. If enough mix servers behave correctly, the final outputs can be decrypted without revealing a straightforward link back to the original input order.
Why are mix-nets used in cryptographic voting research?
Mix-nets are used in cryptographic voting research because elections need both verifiability and ballot secrecy. A well-designed mix can help publish evidence that ballots were processed correctly while breaking the connection between voters and final plaintext selections. Security depends on the cryptographic protocol, implementation, proofs, key management, and assumptions about mix servers.
