What does manufactured majority mean in elections?

The term Manufactured Majority refers to an electoral outcome or rule that produces a majority of seats or representation that is larger than the underlying vote share would otherwise suggest. It gives election, security, legal, or technical readers a specific label for the concept rather than a broader everyday meaning.

How can an electoral system create a manufactured majority?

In practice, Manufactured Majority applies the electoral rule described by the term: an electoral outcome or rule that produces a majority of seats or representation that is larger than the underlying vote share would otherwise suggest. Officials use the specified votes, seats, quotas, districts, or thresholds to determine representation.

Is a manufactured majority the same as a simple majority?

No. A simple majority is a numerical threshold, generally more than half of the relevant votes or members. A manufactured majority describes an electoral outcome in which the seat allocation gives a party or group a majority larger than its underlying vote share would suggest. One is a threshold; the other describes representational distortion.
