Primary definition

1. A random procedure for resolving a VOTE. "In all elections where there is a tie between TIE the two highest candidates for the same office, for all county or precinct offices, it shall be decided by lot by the sheriff of the county in the presence of the candidates; and in the case of the office of circuit judge, senator, representative or any state officer not otherwise provided for, the Secretary of State shall, in the presence of the Governor, and such other electors as may choose to be present, decide the tie by lot." Ala. Code §17-1-3. 2. A group of ballots as separate for counting. "In counting the ballots, the election clerks shall separate them into distinct lots. Each of these lots must consist of 50 ballots, except for one lot, which may have less than 50 ballots. They shall place with each lot a statement of the count in that lot and the names of the election clerks who made the count." 21-A Maine Rev. Stat. §695(2). 3. A process for determining the order of candidates in the method of ALTERNATION BALLOT ROTATION. when the number of candidates exceeds the number of precincts in a municipality
