What is a CSIRT?

The term Computer Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT) refers to a Computer Security Incident Response Team organized to prepare for, detect, analyze, contain, eradicate, recover from, and coordinate response to cybersecurity incidents. It gives election, security, legal, or technical readers a specific label for the concept rather than a broader everyday meaning.

What does a computer security incident response team do?

In practice, Computer Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT) is applied to the technical or security purpose captured by its definition: a Computer Security Incident Response Team organized to prepare for, detect, analyze, contain, eradicate, recover from, and coordinate response to cybersecurity incidents. Organizations combine that function with documented procedures, authorized access, testing, monitoring, and controls appropriate to the system.

How is a CSIRT different from a SOC?

A CSIRT is primarily organized to coordinate and execute incident response, while a Security Operations Center continuously monitors security telemetry, detects suspicious activity, and supports day-to-day defensive operations. The functions often overlap, and a SOC may contain or work closely with a CSIRT, but the terms describe different operational emphases rather than identical teams.
