What is an assembly member?

An assembly member is a person elected, or in some circumstances appointed, to a legislative assembly. In U.S. state-government usage, the title commonly refers to a member of the lower house in states that call that chamber an Assembly. Titles differ elsewhere, so many states use “representative” instead.

What does an assembly member do?

An assembly member represents constituents in a legislative chamber, considers and votes on proposed laws, participates in committees, and performs other duties assigned by the state constitution and legislative rules. The exact role varies by state, but it generally combines lawmaking, budget decisions, oversight, and constituent representation within an assigned district.

Is it “Assemblymember” or “Assembly Member”?

Both forms appear in public usage. “Assembly Member” is a clear generic form, while “Assemblymember” is used as an official or preferred title in some legislatures and government communications. When writing about a particular state, follow that legislature’s own style. Older gendered terms such as “assemblyman” are less suitable for general use.
